7th -11th March 1990

FIJAT V

Programmed by NIKO GORŠIČ (Ljubljana)

I am convinced that the existence of the Titograd festival is tremendously important for development of the small theatre and spiritual intervention of young Yugoslav authors. Namely, the today’s Yugoslav social and theatre alternative is primarily spiritual youth positioned against the conservative physical force as a traditional Balkans argument. And its counterpart – vulgar political theatre, vulgar for being a simple pamphlet, but a solemn recital of the “right ideas”. By the so called important Yugoslav drama writers. Simply put: this is topical merchandise, provincial and dangerous.

As everyone knows, the theme of this Festival is the alternative of the new, meaning of new people, new directors, new dramatists and in a way new actors, therefore the emergence of new people in Yugoslav theatre.

With this selection and the intention to find at least one new man in each community I wanted, in a way, to rebut the constant grumbling that some communities are stagnate in terms of theatre.
